I have virtually finished Valis (see my previous entry, Half-Way Through Valis). Right at the end, before the Afterword by Kim Stanley Robinson, is the Tractates: Cryptica Scriptura of the main protagonist, Horselover Fat – being a fancy Latinisation of “Hidden Writing” (or something like that). This is essentially a numbered list of Fat’s boiled down “views” (i.e. portions of information poured into his brain via the pink laser beam of Valis) on the structure and meaning of the universe and God and such things. Just before this appendix, the narrator – being “Phil Dick,” the author of the book, who is also Horselover Fat, or rather Fat is an aspect of Dick (or something) – mentions a few synchronous occurrences which have occurred within his experience, which, he admits, may be purely coincidence or may be connected events which have occurred by the will of Valis (or “Zebra” or God or whatever). I have, just before starting to write what I am here writing, read a part of the Cryptica Scriptura, specifically entry #47, entitled TWO SOURCE COSMOGONY, in which Fat (Valis, “Zebra,” God…) speaks (to vastly over-summarise such) of there being in existence Hyperuniverse I and Hyperuniverse II, one being Yin and the other being Yang, one being rational and the other being irrational, one being ordered and the other being chaotic, and other such related dichotomies. And then, the first piece of paperwork I picked up after reading this TWO SOURCE COSMOGONY, was an invoice which was split into two parts, part I and part II… note how in both cases, the Roman numerals, I and II, were employed to denote the numbers 1 and 2. This type of invoice doesn’t often come up – I think I would even say “rarely”! Certainly not after I have just been reading a TWO SOURCE COSMOGONY about Hyperuniverses I and II…
Coincidence?
Synchronous events implanted into my existence by Valis? Or “Zebra”? Or God? Or something?
Dick/Fat did not, by the end of the book, know the meaning, if indeed one existed, of the synchronicities he was experiencing – he did, however, feel that he should “stay awake” … by which I take to mean “stay alert” and be open-minded. I feel a concurrence with this position…
