“… contributing to society …”

… is a phrase/concept which is bandied about with reference to people who “scrounge of the State” (aka. “claim benefits”). It is suggested that people who “scrounge off the State” do not “contribute to society” because they do not work and therefore do not pay taxes. Which begs the question… is the payment of taxes the only way (or the only significant/”worthwhile” way) to “contribute to society”? Is it possible that an unemployed “State-scrounger” could “contribute to society” by spreading joy, wisdom and general goodwill? Oh sorry, my mistake, such things are not measurable…
