Not so Relentless

Page 116 of Dean Koontz’s Relentless quotes G.K. Chesterton in 1933: “The disintegration of rational society started in the drift from hearth and family; the solution must be to drift back.”

Serendipity comes in the most unlikely of places. Prior to Koontz’s thriller, I read Sue Gerhardt’s The Selfish Society, which espouses a viewpoint I reckon Koontz (or at least his protagonist) would approve of: that in order to “fix” society, we need to move away from the harsh, unscrupulous modern Capitalism and towards a more family-based moral social structure.

How true!

And how strange that two very different books should point towards the same moral message…
